Quick answer

Facial hair in women is usually hormonal (PCOS, perimenopause, thyroid changes) or genetic, and it does not respond well to tweezing or threading, which only make it coarser. Laser hair removal treats the follicle itself: most clients need 6–8 sessions 4 weeks apart for the chin and upper lip, with hormonal cases needing occasional maintenance.

A common problem no one talks about

Tweezing in the car mirror, bleaching, threading every two weeks, checking the chin in every reflection. Unwanted facial hair chips away at confidence in a way that has nothing to do with vanity. It is also extremely common: hirsutism (male-pattern hair growth in women) affects an estimated 5–10% of women, and mild chin or upper-lip hair is more common still. It is medical, it is treatable, and our technicians see it every single day.

Understanding it

Why facial hair grows, and why plucking makes it worse

Fine, pale “peach fuzz” is normal on every face. The problem hairs are the coarse, dark terminal hairs, which are switched on by androgens (male hormones that every woman produces). Anything that raises androgen levels or makes follicles more sensitive to them can trigger growth:

PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common cause of hirsutism. Hair on the chin, jawline, upper lip, sideburns and sometimes the chest or abdomen.

Perimenopause & menopause

As estrogen falls, androgens have more influence. Many women notice new chin hairs in their 40s and 50s.

Genetics & ethnicity

Women of Mediterranean, South Asian and Middle Eastern heritage often have more facial hair naturally, with no hormonal problem at all.

Medications & conditions

Some hormonal medications, steroids, thyroid disorders and adrenal conditions can increase growth. Your doctor can check if something new appears suddenly.

Tweezing, waxing & threading

Repeated pulling irritates the follicle and can stimulate a thicker, darker regrowth, the opposite of what you want.

How laser hair removal helps

Laser treats the follicle at its root, which is exactly where hormonal hair is produced. Sessions on the chin or upper lip take about ten minutes, and there is nothing to hide afterwards. You can go straight back to work. Because facial hair cycles quickly, we schedule face sessions every 4 weeks.

  • Chin, upper lip, jawline, sideburns, neck and the “beard” outline can all be treated in one short visit
  • Safe on every skin tone: the Nd:YAG wavelength treats darker skin without affecting the skin’s own pigment
  • No plucking, bleaching or threading between sessions. You simply shave or trim, and the hair grows back finer each time
  • PCOS and menopausal hair respond well to laser; because the hormonal driver continues, we plan an inexpensive maintenance visit once or twice a year
  • Face sessions start at $100, and new clients receive a $50 gift card

What to expect at Oxyderm

We begin with a private, free consultation. If your hair growth is new, rapid or comes with irregular periods, acne or weight changes, we will suggest a check-up with your doctor as well. Treating the hormonal cause alongside the hair gives the best long-term result. A patch test confirms your settings, and most clients start treatment the same day.

Expect 6–8 sessions four weeks apart for genetic hair, and 8–12 for hormonal hair, followed by maintenance every 6–12 months. Shave the area 24 hours before each visit (yes, shaving is fine. It does not make facial hair thicker), avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids for three days before, and wear SPF 30+ daily.

Honest expectations

Laser is highly effective on dark facial hair and will not work on white, grey or very fine blonde hairs, for those, electrolysis is the right tool and we will tell you so. In a small number of clients with fine, dense facial hair, laser can occasionally stimulate growth on the borders of the treated area (paradoxical hypertrichosis); our technicians choose settings and treatment margins specifically to avoid this and will discuss it with you if your hair pattern puts you at risk.

The staff are professional, welcoming, and took the time to explain the process clearly, which made me feel comfortable right away. I am currently on my second session, but even after my first treatment I already… a huge reduction in hair growth and smoother skin with minimal irritation. I’m really happy with my results so far and excited to continue my sessions. I would definitely recommend this clinic to anyone considering laser hair removal.
FAQ

Facial Hair in Women: your questions, answered

Straight answers from the Oxyderm team. Still wondering about something? Call us. We love these questions.

Does laser hair removal work for PCOS facial hair?

Yes. Laser disables the follicles that are producing the hair, and PCOS hair is dark and coarse, which is exactly what the laser targets best. Because PCOS keeps stimulating new follicles, most clients need 8–12 sessions and then a maintenance session once or twice a year. Managing the hormonal side with your doctor makes results last longer.

Will shaving my face make the hair grow back thicker?

No. Shaving cuts the hair at the surface and has no effect on the follicle. It feels coarser because the tip is blunt, not because more hair is growing. Shaving is the only hair removal we recommend between laser sessions: tweezing, waxing and threading remove the root the laser needs.

How many sessions do the chin and upper lip need?

Genetic facial hair usually clears in 6–8 sessions spaced four weeks apart. Hormonal hair (PCOS, menopause) typically takes 8–12 sessions, with a touch-up every 6–12 months because the hormones keep recruiting new follicles.

Is laser hair removal on the face safe for darker skin?

Yes. We use the Candela GentleMax Pro’s Nd:YAG (1064 nm) wavelength for Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI. It passes through the skin’s pigment and targets the hair, which is why it is considered the gold standard for darker skin tones. A patch test at your consultation confirms the settings.

Does it hurt on the face?

Most clients describe a quick warm snap, like an elastic band, cooled immediately by the device’s cryogen spray. The upper lip is the most sensitive spot and takes under a minute. No numbing cream is needed for most people.

Can I have laser hair removal on my face while pregnant or breastfeeding?

We ask clients to wait until after pregnancy. Laser hair removal has no known risk to the baby, but pregnancy hormones change hair growth and skin sensitivity, so results are unpredictable and pigmentation is more likely. Breastfeeding clients can be treated on the face.

Was this helpful?
Can laser make facial hair worse?

Rarely, in clients with fine, dense, light-brown facial hair, laser can stimulate hair on the edges of the treated area, called paradoxical hypertrichosis. We assess your hair pattern at the consultation, choose conservative settings and treat with clear margins to minimise the risk, and we will tell you if you are better suited to electrolysis.
