Hair Growing Back After Laser? Here’s Why

You finished a course of laser somewhere else and the hair is creeping back. Or you are three sessions in and can’t see a difference. Both are common, both have clear causes, and both are fixable when the treatment is planned properly.

Quick answer

Laser hair removal gives permanent hair reduction, not 100% removal: after a full course most people keep 10–20% of finer, lighter hair. Regrowth beyond that is usually hormonal (PCOS, menopause, thyroid, pregnancy), caused by under-powered or wrongly timed sessions, or hair too light for laser. A consultation identifies the cause and a short touch-up plan handles it.

What “permanent” really means

Health Canada and the FDA describe laser hair removal as permanent hair reduction. A follicle that has been fully heated cannot grow hair again; but hairs grow in cycles, only the actively growing ones are affected in a session, and some follicles are only weakened rather than destroyed. After a full course of 6–8 sessions most clients keep roughly 10–20% of their original hair: fine, pale and easy to ignore. Hair returning thicker or in patches after that means something else is going on.

Understanding it

Why hair comes back

These are the causes we see most often when clients come to us after treatment elsewhere:

Hormones

PCOS, perimenopause, thyroid disorders, pregnancy and some medications recruit new follicles that were dormant when you were treated.

Under-powered sessions

Settings kept too low “to be safe”, or an IPL device sold as laser, weaken follicles without disabling them. The hair thins for a while, then returns.

Wrong timing

Sessions too close together or too far apart miss the growth phase, so whole cycles of hair are never treated.

Waxing between sessions

Removing the root before a session leaves the laser nothing to target. Those follicles survive the course untouched.

Light, fine or grey hair

Blonde, red, grey and very fine hair lacks the pigment laser needs; it looks like regrowth but was never treatable.

Incomplete course

Stopping at three or four sessions because the hair “looked gone”. It was in a resting phase, not removed.

How we treat stubborn regrowth

We start by finding the cause rather than selling more sessions. A free consultation reviews your previous treatment (device, settings if you have them, timing), your hair colour and pattern, and any hormonal changes. From there we build a short, targeted plan.

  • Touch-up courses of 2–4 sessions on the Candela GentleMax Pro, at the correct energy for your skin and hair
  • Sessions timed to your hair cycle, 4 weeks for the face, 6–8 weeks for the body, so every growth phase is caught
  • Nd:YAG for darker skin and Alexandrite for fair skin, chosen per area rather than one setting for everything
  • Referral to your doctor when a hormonal pattern suggests PCOS or thyroid involvement, so results last
  • Honest advice when hair is too light for laser: electrolysis is the right tool and we will say so

What to expect at Oxyderm

Bring any records from your previous clinic if you have them. We patch-test, then treat the areas that are regrowing at full clinical settings. Shave 24 hours before each session, stop waxing or plucking entirely, and protect the area from sun. Most clients need 2–4 touch-up sessions, then a maintenance visit every 6–18 months depending on hormones.

Setting expectations

If your regrowth is hormonal, laser will keep the hair under control but cannot switch the hormones off, expect an annual maintenance session rather than a one-time fix. If your hair has turned grey, laser will not remove it, and we will point you to electrolysis. Everything else, under-treatment, timing, waxing, is completely fixable.

The staff are professional, welcoming, and took the time to explain the process clearly, which made me feel comfortable right away. I am currently on my second session, but even after my first treatment I already… a huge reduction in hair growth and smoother skin with minimal irritation. I’m really happy with my results so far and excited to continue my sessions. I would definitely recommend this clinic to anyone considering laser hair removal.

FAQ

Hair Regrowth After Laser: your questions, answered

Straight answers from the Oxyderm team. Still wondering about something? Call us. We love these questions.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

It is permanent hair reduction. Follicles that are fully heated never grow hair again, and after a complete course most clients have 80–90% less hair with the remainder finer and lighter. Hormonal changes can activate new follicles later, which is why a touch-up every year or two is normal for some people.

Why did my hair grow back after laser at another clinic?

The most common reasons are settings that were too low, an IPL device rather than a true laser, sessions timed outside the hair growth cycle, waxing between sessions, or a course that stopped too early. Hormonal changes and hair too light for laser also look like regrowth. A consultation can usually pinpoint which.

Was this helpful?
How many touch-up sessions will I need?

Usually 2–4, spaced 4–8 weeks apart depending on the area, followed by maintenance every 6–18 months if your regrowth is hormonal. We quote exactly after the consultation and patch test.

Was this helpful?
Can PCOS stop laser from working?

No: laser works on PCOS hair, but PCOS keeps stimulating new follicles, so the results need maintaining. Most clients with PCOS do a longer initial course (8–12 sessions) and then one or two sessions a year. Managing the hormonal side with your doctor makes the results last longer.

Does hair grow back thicker after laser?

No. Treated hair grows back finer and lighter, if at all. In rare cases (fine, dense hair on the face or upper arms) laser can stimulate hair at the edges of the treated area, paradoxical hypertrichosis, which is why we choose settings and margins carefully for those areas.

Was this helpful?
Why does laser not work on grey or blonde hair?

Laser energy is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in dark hair. Grey, white, blonde and red hair has little or none, so the follicle is never heated enough to be disabled. Electrolysis treats each follicle individually with electricity and works on any hair colour.
