Quick answer

Ingrown hairs happen when a shaved or waxed hair regrows and curls back into the skin. Laser hair removal disables the follicle so there is no hair to trap: most clients see fewer bumps after 2–3 sessions and clear, smooth skin after 6–8. It is safe for every skin tone, including skin prone to dark marks.

Sound familiar?

You shave or wax, and within days the area is bumpy, itchy or sore. The bumps can become infected (folliculitis), leave dark spots (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) or scar, and the next shave starts it all over again. Curly or coarse hair, the bikini line, the neck and the backs of the thighs are the classic trouble spots. If this is your routine, you are not doing anything wrong: it is the hair removal method that is working against you.

Understanding it

Why ingrown hairs keep coming back

An ingrown hair is a regrowing hair that has been cut to a sharp point, then curls or grows sideways back into the skin. The body treats it as a foreign object and inflames the follicle. Several everyday factors make it worse:

Shaving & waxing

Both leave a sharp, angled hair tip that can pierce the follicle wall as it grows back, waxing also distorts the follicle.

Curly or coarse hair

Tightly curled hair naturally bends back toward the skin, which is why razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis) are so common on curly hair.

Friction & tight clothing

Leggings, underwear seams and collars rub the bikini line, thighs and neck, pushing regrowing hairs sideways.

Dead-skin build-up

A layer of dead cells and oil caps the follicle, so the new hair grows under it instead of through it.

Picking & tweezing

Digging bumps out inflames the skin further and often leaves the dark marks that last longer than the bump did.

How laser hair removal stops ingrown hairs

Laser hair removal is the only routine that removes the cause. The laser targets the pigment in the hair and heats the follicle so it can no longer produce a hair, no hair, no ingrown hair. At Oxyderm we treat ingrown-prone areas with the Candela GentleMax Pro, which is licensed for all skin types and has a built-in cooling spray for comfort.

  • Bumps calm down quickly: most clients notice fewer new ingrowns after the second or third session
  • Existing dark marks fade over time once the skin stops being re-injured. We can add a brightening plan if they are stubborn
  • Works on the bikini line, underarms, neck, jawline, legs and buttocks. Anywhere razor bumps show up
  • Safe for darker skin tones with the Nd:YAG setting, which bypasses skin pigment and targets the hair
  • No more daily shaving: hair that does regrow after your course is finer, sparser and rarely ingrown

What to expect at Oxyderm

Your first visit is a free consultation with a certified laser technician. We look at the area, confirm your skin type on the Fitzpatrick scale and do a patch test so your settings are right from day one. If the skin is actively infected we will calm it first: treating over inflamed bumps is uncomfortable and unnecessary.

Plan for 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Shave (don’t wax) 24 hours before each visit, skip sun and self-tanner for two weeks, and keep the area moisturized between sessions. Sessions for a bikini line or neck take about 15 minutes; full legs closer to an hour.

Is it right for you?

Laser works best on hair with pigment, brown or black hair on any skin tone. Blonde, red, grey or white hairs do not absorb enough laser energy, so we will tell you honestly at the consultation if electrolysis would suit you better for those. If your bumps are on the beard area, see our guide to body hair for men; if dark marks are your main worry, ask us about pairing laser with skin brightening.

FAQ

Ingrown Hairs & Razor Bumps: your questions, answered

Straight answers from the Oxyderm team. Still wondering about something? Call us. We love these questions.

Does laser hair removal get rid of ingrown hairs permanently?

It removes the cause. Once a follicle has been disabled it cannot grow a hair, so it cannot produce an ingrown hair. After a full course (usually 6–8 sessions) most clients have 80–90% less hair in the area and the bumps stop. Hormonal changes can wake a few follicles years later, which a single touch-up session handles.

Can you laser over existing razor bumps?

Yes, as long as the skin is not broken or infected. Mild bumps are fine to treat; if there is active infection we ask you to let it settle for a week first. The laser itself calms the follicles, so most clients see the area improve after the first session.

Will the dark marks from my ingrown hairs go away?

The marks are post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and they fade once the skin stops being re-injured, usually over 2–4 months. Laser hair removal removes the trigger; if the marks are stubborn we can add a skin-brightening facial or pigment treatment to speed things up.

Is laser hair removal safe for the bikini line if I get ingrown hairs there?

It is one of the most common areas we treat for exactly this reason. We use a smaller spot size and the appropriate wavelength for your skin tone, and the cooling spray keeps it comfortable. Wear loose cotton underwear for the first day or two afterwards.

How should I remove hair between laser sessions?

Shave only. Waxing, epilating, threading or tweezing pulls the root out, and the laser needs the root in place to work. Shaving 24 hours before your appointment is ideal. It leaves the follicle intact and lets the laser energy reach it.

Was this helpful?
How many sessions until the ingrown hairs stop?

Most clients notice a real difference after 2–3 sessions and are largely bump-free by session 5 or 6. A complete course is 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, because the laser only affects hairs in their active growth phase and hairs cycle at different times.
