Laser hair removal is safe for dark skin when the clinic uses a long-pulse Nd:YAG (1064 nm) laser, which passes through the skin’s melanin and targets only the hair. Oxyderm treats Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI with the Candela GentleMax Pro after a patch test, and most clients need 6–8 sessions.
Why darker skin needs a different laser
Lasers remove hair by targeting melanin: the pigment in the hair shaft. Darker skin also contains more melanin, so a laser that is not selective enough heats the skin as well as the hair. That is what causes the burns, blisters and dark or light patches some clients have experienced at clinics using IPL or short-wavelength lasers. The solution is a wavelength that skin melanin barely absorbs but hair still does: the 1064 nm Nd:YAG.
The risks a poorly chosen laser creates
Understanding what can go wrong is the best way to see why the technology and the technician matter:
Burns & blisters
Short wavelengths (IPL, some diode settings) are absorbed by skin melanin and overheat the surface.
Hyperpigmentation
Overheated skin responds with extra pigment, leaving dark patches that can take months to fade.
Hypopigmentation
Too much energy can also destroy pigment, leaving pale spots that are harder to reverse.
Under-treatment
Clinics that turn the energy down too far to “be safe” leave the hair untouched, sessions that do nothing.

How we treat dark skin safely
Oxyderm uses the Candela GentleMax Pro, a dual-wavelength platform whose Nd:YAG mode is the clinical standard for Fitzpatrick IV–VI. Our technicians are trained specifically on darker skin and do not guess: every new client gets a patch test, and settings are increased gradually across sessions as we see how your skin responds.
- Long-pulse 1064 nm Nd:YAG passes through skin melanin and heats only the hair follicle
- Dynamic cooling spray protects the surface with every pulse, keeping the skin comfortable and the energy where it belongs
- Mandatory patch test and a 48-hour check before your first full session
- Effective on coarse, curly hair: the type most prone to ingrown hairs and razor bumps on brown and Black skin
- Face, underarms, bikini and Brazilian, legs, arms and back. Every area can be treated

What to expect at Oxyderm
Your free consultation includes a skin-type assessment and an honest conversation about your history: any previous laser, IPL, bleaching creams, keloid scarring or recent tanning changes the plan. Avoid sun, tanning beds and self-tanner for two weeks before each session, pause retinoids and acids for three days, and shave (never wax) 24 hours before. Sun protection afterwards is non-negotiable: SPF 30+ every day on treated areas.
Because the Nd:YAG is gentler on the skin, some clients need one or two extra sessions compared with fair-skinned clients: plan for 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with visible thinning from session two or three.
Questions to ask any clinic
Whether you choose Oxyderm or not, ask three things before you let anyone treat darker skin: which wavelength will you use (the answer should be Nd:YAG 1064 nm), will you patch-test first, and how many clients with my skin tone have you treated. If a clinic offers IPL for skin type V or VI, walk away.
Why clients love Oxyderm
Real, unedited Google reviews from Edmonton clients: the experience we work for every day.
I did hyperpigmentation treatment at Oxyderm Laser Clinic and I am very happy with my results. I had dark spots and uneven skin for long time and nothing was working for me. The staff explained everything in simple way… nd made me feel comfortable. After few treatments, I can see big difference. My skin looks much clearer, brighter, and smooth. Dark spots are much lighter now. I feel more confident without makeup. Clinic is very clean and professional. Staff is kind and caring. I really recommend Oxyderm Laser Clinic if anyone has skin problems like mine.
The staff are professional, welcoming, and took the time to explain the process clearly, which made me feel comfortable right away. I am currently on my second session, but even after my first treatment I already… a huge reduction in hair growth and smoother skin with minimal irritation. I’m really happy with my results so far and excited to continue my sessions. I would definitely recommend this clinic to anyone considering laser hair removal.
Laser Hair Removal for Dark Skin: your questions, answered
Straight answers from the Oxyderm team. Still wondering about something? Call us. We love these questions.
Is laser hair removal safe for Black and brown skin?
Yes, with the right laser. A long-pulse Nd:YAG (1064 nm) passes through the skin’s melanin and targets the hair, which is why it is the clinical standard for Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI. Oxyderm uses the Candela GentleMax Pro in Nd:YAG mode with a patch test before every first treatment.
Which laser is best for dark skin?
The Nd:YAG (1064 nm) laser. Alexandrite (755 nm) suits fair to olive skin, diode (810 nm) suits light-to-medium skin, and IPL is not recommended for dark skin at all. Our Candela GentleMax Pro combines Alexandrite and Nd:YAG so we can choose the correct wavelength for every client.
Will laser leave dark spots on my skin?
Not when the correct wavelength and settings are used: the goal of the Nd:YAG and the cooling spray is to leave the skin untouched. The main risk factor is sun exposure or tanning around your session, which is why we ask for two sun-free weeks before and after and daily SPF.
Does laser hurt more on darker skin?
No. The Nd:YAG bypasses skin pigment, so the skin is not heated; you feel the same brief warm snap on the hair as anyone else, cooled immediately by the cryogen spray. Some clients find the Nd:YAG pulses feel slightly deeper but less sharp.
Do I need more sessions than someone with fair skin?
Sometimes one or two more. Because we increase energy gradually to protect the skin, dark-skinned clients often need 7–9 sessions instead of 6–8. Coarse, dark hair responds very well, so the end result is the same.
Can laser hair removal help with razor bumps on my neck or bikini line?
Yes: pseudofolliculitis (razor bumps) is extremely common on curly hair and is one of the best reasons to choose laser. Once the follicles are disabled the bumps stop forming, and the dark marks they leave fade over the following months.
