Quick answer

Legs are a large surface area, so this is one of the longer appointments on the menu — full legs take the better part of a session while lower legs are considerably quicker. The hair is usually dark and responds well. Because legs get the most sun of any area we treat, the two-week no-tan rule before and after each session matters here more than anywhere else.

Full legs, lower legs, or somewhere in between

Most clients book one of three things: full legs, lower legs from the knee down, or upper legs and thighs. Lower legs are the most common starting point, because that is where stubble shows and where most of the shaving happens. You can start there and add the thighs later; your technician will quote each option at the consultation so you can see the difference before committing.

Legs are where the time saving is most obvious. Shaving two full legs properly takes most people several minutes every day or two, year-round, and the result lasts about a day. A completed laser course replaces that with the occasional maintenance visit.

What to expect

What to expect from a leg appointment

You will be on the treatment bed with the area exposed one section at a time. Your technician works systematically — shins, calves, knees, then upwards if you are doing full legs — in overlapping passes with the cooling spray firing ahead of each pulse. The knees and shins sit close to the bone and are the sharpest-feeling parts; the thighs and calves are usually straightforward.

Allow proper time

Full legs are at the long end of our appointment range. Lower legs are much quicker, which is why many clients start there.

Sun is the real constraint

Legs see more sun than any other area we treat. A tan, including self-tanner, means we have to postpone — treating tanned skin risks burns and pigment change.

Back to normal the same day

Expect pinkness and warmth around the follicles for a few hours. Skip the gym, hot tub and sauna that day and you will not notice it by tomorrow.

Smooth between visits

Hair that regrows during your course comes back finer and patchier each time, so the in-between stage looks nothing like regrowth after shaving.

How we treat legs

This is the treatment we use on the legs. Which one, and at what settings, is decided with you at a free consultation.

Planning a leg course around an Edmonton summer

The no-sun window on either side of each session makes timing worth thinking about. Starting in autumn or winter means you can get through most of a course while your legs are covered anyway, and arrive at summer with the work already done.

  • Starting in the cooler months keeps the two-week no-sun rule easy to honour
  • Shave the night before — never wax, thread or epilate during your course
  • No self-tanner for two weeks before a session; it reads as pigment to the laser
  • SPF 30 or higher on treated legs any time they are uncovered, including on cloudy days
  • Moisturise between sessions, but leave products off on the day of treatment
  • Shorts or a loose skirt to your appointment is easier than peeling off tight jeans afterwards

Safe on every skin tone

The Candela GentleMax Pro is licensed for every Fitzpatrick skin type: the Alexandrite wavelength suits lighter skin and the Nd:YAG passes through the skin’s own pigment to reach the hair, which is why it is the safer choice for deeper skin tones. Your technician confirms your skin type and patch-tests before the first full pass.

For large areas like legs we may also use the LightSheer Duet, a diode platform built for covering ground quickly on bigger surfaces. Your technician will choose the platform and settings that suit your skin and hair at the consultation.

Is it right for you?

Laser works on pigmented hair, so dark leg hair on any skin tone is ideal and white, grey or very pale blonde hair will not respond. If dark pores or rough bumps on your legs are as much the problem as the hair itself, see our guide to strawberry legs — the cause there is the follicle, and treating the hair addresses it at the source.

FAQ

Laser Hair Removal for legs: your questions

Straight answers from the Oxyderm team. Still wondering about something? Call us. We love these questions.

How long does laser hair removal on full legs take?

Full legs sit at the long end of our appointment range because of the surface area involved. Lower legs on their own are much quicker. Your technician will confirm the time for the exact area you are booking at your consultation.

Was this helpful?
Can I treat just my lower legs?

Yes, and it is the most popular option. Lower legs from the knee down cover where stubble is most visible and where most daily shaving happens. You can add thighs later as a separate area if you want to.

Was this helpful?
Can I have laser on my legs if I have a tan?

No. Tanned skin — including from a tanning bed or self-tanner — holds extra pigment that absorbs laser energy meant for the hair, which risks burns and pigment changes. We need two weeks with no sun and no tanner before a session, and the same afterwards.

Was this helpful?
How soon can I shave after a leg session?

You can shave again once the skin no longer feels warm or tender, usually after a day or two. Treated hairs often work their way out of the follicle over the following week or two, which looks like regrowth but is actually shedding.

Was this helpful?
Will laser help with the dark dots on my legs?

Often. Those dots are usually hair visible inside the follicle, or pigment left behind by repeated shaving and ingrown hairs. Removing the hair removes the cause of both. We will tell you at your consultation how much of your particular pattern is hair and how much is pigment that may need a separate plan.

Was this helpful?
Do I need to do both legs at once?

No, but most clients do, because the pricing is per area and the spacing between sessions applies to every area equally. Treating one leg and not the other simply means you will be shaving one of them.
