Laser Hair Removal for Underarms
The underarm is the area most clients start with, and the one they wish they had started with sooner. It is small, it is quick, and it is the end of daily shaving, razor burn and deodorant stinging on freshly shaved skin.

Underarms are one of the fastest areas we treat — the appointment is usually over before a coffee break. The hair here is coarse and dark, which is exactly what the laser targets best, so most clients see a real drop in regrowth early in their course. Shave 24 hours before, skip deodorant on the day of treatment, and expect smooth skin rather than stubble between sessions.
Why underarms respond so well
Underarm hair is terminal hair: thick, dark and firmly rooted, with a lot of pigment for the laser to absorb. That combination makes it one of the most reliable areas on the body to treat. The area is also small and flat enough to cover in a handful of passes, so appointments are short and easy to fit into a work day.
Most clients are not here for aesthetics alone. Shaving an underarm every day or two leaves it permanently irritated: razor burn, ingrown hairs, dark shadowing from repeated trauma, and deodorant that stings on broken skin. Taking the hair out of the equation lets the skin settle down.
What the appointment is actually like
You lie back with your hand behind your head so the skin is flat and the hair is accessible. Your technician works in overlapping passes; the cooling spray fires a fraction of a second before each pulse, so what you feel is cold first, then a brief snap. Most people describe it as an elastic band flick, and both underarms are usually done in minutes.
In and out
Underarms are among the shortest appointments on the menu, which is why many clients pair them with another small area in the same visit.
No downtime
The skin looks a little pink and feels warm, like mild sunburn, and settles within a few hours. You can go straight back to work.
No deodorant on the day
Antiperspirant leaves a residue that sits between the laser and the skin. Come with the area clean and bare, and leave it off until the warmth has gone.
Friction-free
Because there is no stubble, the daily rub of sleeves and bag straps stops catching, which is what finally lets irritated underarm skin calm down.
How we treat underarms
This is the treatment we use on the underarms. Which one, and at what settings, is decided with you at a free consultation.
Getting the most out of your course
Laser only disables follicles that are in their active growth phase, and not every hair is in that phase on the same day — which is why the course is spread out rather than done in one go. Keeping to your spacing matters more than any product you put on afterwards.
- Shave the night before or the morning of your appointment, so the follicle is intact but the surface hair is gone
- Skip sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tanner on the area for two weeks before and after each session
- Leave deodorant, antiperspirant and body spray off until the skin has stopped feeling warm
- Loose sleeves for the first day: friction on a freshly treated underarm is the main cause of avoidable irritation
- Keep your appointments on schedule — a session taken late simply misses the growth phase it was timed for

Safe on every skin tone
The Candela GentleMax Pro is licensed for every Fitzpatrick skin type: the Alexandrite wavelength suits lighter skin and the Nd:YAG passes through the skin’s own pigment to reach the hair, which is why it is the safer choice for deeper skin tones. Your technician confirms your skin type and patch-tests before the first full pass.
Shave the area 24 hours before each visit and do not wax, epilate, thread or tweeze between sessions: the laser needs the hair root in place to work, and pulling it out wastes the appointment.
Is it right for you?
Laser needs pigment in the hair to work, so it is highly effective on brown and black underarm hair and will not do anything for white, grey or very fine blonde hair. If that is what you have, we will say so at the consultation rather than sell you a course that cannot deliver — electrolysis is the right tool for unpigmented hair. If you are prone to ingrown hairs or dark marks under the arm, read our guide to ingrown hairs and razor bumps as well.

Laser Hair Removal for underarms: your questions
Straight answers from the Oxyderm team. Still wondering about something? Call us. We love these questions.
How long does an underarm laser session take?
Underarms are one of the quickest areas we treat: the laser work itself is a matter of minutes for both sides. Allow a little longer for your first visit, which includes the consultation and a patch test.
Does laser hair removal on the underarms hurt?
It is one of the more sensitive areas because the skin is thin and the hair is coarse, but it is also over quickly. The GentleMax Pro fires a cryogen cooling spray immediately before each pulse, so most clients describe a cold snap rather than pain. Tell your technician if it is too much and the settings can be adjusted.
Can I wear deodorant after underarm laser?
Leave it off until the skin has stopped feeling warm, usually the same evening. Antiperspirant on freshly treated skin is the most common cause of stinging and irritation afterwards. Come to the appointment with the area clean and product-free too.
Will laser help the dark shadow under my arms?
Often, yes, though indirectly. Much of that shadow is a combination of stubble visible beneath the surface and post-inflammatory pigment from years of shaving. Removing the hair takes away both the shadow and the trauma causing the pigment. If the discolouration is stubborn we can discuss a brightening plan at your consultation.
Can I shave between laser sessions?
Yes, and shaving is the only hair removal you should use during your course. Waxing, epilating, threading and tweezing all pull out the root that the laser needs to target, so they set your progress back.
Is underarm laser safe on darker skin?
Yes. We use the Nd:YAG wavelength on deeper skin tones, which passes through the skin’s pigment and targets the hair instead. Your technician confirms your Fitzpatrick skin type and patch-tests before treating the whole area.
