Microneedling for Stretch Marks

Stretch marks on the abdomen, thighs, hips and upper arms are scars in the dermis, which is exactly the layer microneedling works in. It will not erase them, and we will not tell you it will — but it can meaningfully improve their texture and colour.

Quick answer

Stretch marks form when skin is stretched faster than its collagen and elastin can accommodate, leaving a band of scar tissue. Microneedling provokes new collagen in that band, which can improve how the marks sit and catch the light. Older silvery-white marks respond more slowly than newer red or purple ones. This is an improvement treatment, not a removal treatment, and your consultation will be frank about which yours are.

What a stretch mark actually is

A stretch mark (striae) is a scar. When skin is stretched faster than the dermis can keep up with — pregnancy, a growth spurt, rapid weight or muscle gain — the collagen and elastin fibres tear, and the body patches the gap with disorganised scar tissue. That tissue has a different structure from the skin around it, which is why it catches light differently and feels slightly indented or glossy.

Their age matters more than their size. Newer marks are red, pink or purple because there is still active blood supply and ongoing remodelling, and they are more responsive. Older marks have faded to silvery-white, the blood supply has receded and the tissue has settled, which makes change slower and more modest.

What to expect

How microneedling helps, and how much

Microneedling creates controlled injury through the scar band, which restarts the remodelling process that stopped when the mark matured. New collagen laid down in and around the band can make it shallower, smoother and less distinct from the surrounding skin.

Works in the right layer

Stretch marks sit in the dermis. Surface treatments and creams cannot reach them; needling can.

Large areas, longer visits

An abdomen or both outer thighs is a substantial surface area, so these are full-length appointments.

Pink for a day or two

The treated area looks flushed and feels warm, as with facial needling, and settles on a similar timeline.

Honest expectations

Improvement in texture and colour is a realistic goal. Complete removal is not, for any treatment, and we will say so.

Practical points for body areas

Body skin is thicker than facial skin and the areas are larger, so the sessions are longer and the aftercare has to survive waistbands and gym clothes rather than makeup.

  • Wear loose clothing to the appointment and home again — a waistband sitting on a treated abdomen is the main irritation risk
  • No sun, tanning bed or self-tanner on the area for two weeks either side of a session
  • Skip the gym, sauna, hot tub and swimming pool for the rest of the day
  • Follow the aftercare you are given and keep actives off the area until cleared
  • SPF 30 or higher any time the area is uncovered — new collagen and settling scar tissue both mark easily in UV
  • Stay on your spacing: this is a remodelling process, and it works cumulatively

If your stretch marks are new

If your marks are still red or purple, you are in the better window, because the tissue is still actively remodelling and more willing to respond. That is worth knowing if you are deciding whether to start now or wait. We will look at the colour and texture of your marks at the consultation and tell you plainly which category they fall into and what that means for the number of sessions and the likely degree of change.

Is it right for you?

Microneedling is mechanical and does not target pigment, so there is no skin-tone restriction. It is not appropriate over broken, infected or actively inflamed skin, during certain medications, or in pregnancy — tell your technician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding and we will plan around it. If your main concern is loose skin rather than the marks themselves, radio-frequency skin tightening works on a different problem and we will point you there instead.

FAQ

Microneedling for abdomen, thighs & hips: your questions

Straight answers from the Oxyderm team. Still wondering about something? Call us. We love these questions.

Can microneedling remove stretch marks completely?

No, and neither can anything else. Stretch marks are scar tissue in the dermis. Microneedling can make them shallower, smoother and less visually distinct from the skin around them, which is a real improvement, but a mark that has formed does not disappear. Anyone promising removal is overselling.

Do old white stretch marks respond?

More slowly and more modestly than new ones. Older marks have lost their blood supply and the tissue has matured, so there is less active remodelling to work with. Newer red or purple marks are in a more responsive phase.

Which areas can you treat?

The abdomen, hips, outer and inner thighs, buttocks, upper arms and breasts are all treatable. Larger areas mean longer appointments, and we will quote your specific area at the consultation.

Was this helpful?
How many sessions will I need?

Microneedling is done as a course with sessions spaced several weeks apart, and body areas with mature scar tissue generally need patience. Rather than selling you a fixed block up front, we review the area as you go and tell you what we are seeing.

Was this helpful?
Can I have it while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Tell your technician at the consultation. We plan around pregnancy and breastfeeding rather than treating through it, and in many cases the sensible advice is to wait, since skin is still changing.

Was this helpful?
Is it painful on the abdomen?

Topical numbing is applied and given time to work. Body skin is generally less sensitive than the face, though areas over bone — the hip bones in particular — register more sharply. Tell your technician and the depth or pace is adjusted.
