Key takeaways
- Most areas need 6–8 sessions, 4–6 weeks apart on the face and 6–8 weeks apart on the body.
- You only ever treat the 15–25% of hairs that are actively growing. That is why one session cannot finish the job.
- Hormonal areas (chin, jawline, PCOS-related growth) and fine or light hair need more sessions.
- Stretching the gap beyond 8 weeks or skipping sessions lets follicles recover, so the course takes longer overall.
The short answer: 6 to 8 sessions
For the majority of clients and body areas, a full course of laser hair removal is six to eight sessions. Most people notice 20–30% less hair after the first session, roughly half gone by session three or four, and 80–90% permanent reduction at the end of the course. A maintenance session once or twice a year afterwards keeps the few fine hairs that return in check.
Why one session can never be enough
Every hair follicle cycles through three phases:
- Anagen (growing): the hair is attached to its blood supply and full of pigment. This is the only phase the laser can permanently disable.
- Catagen (transition): the follicle shrinks and detaches.
- Telogen (resting): the old hair sits in the follicle until it sheds.
Only about 15–25% of the hairs in any area are in anagen on a given day. A session destroys most of those, and then you wait for the next wave to enter the growth phase before treating again. Six to eight waves, six to eight sessions.
Sessions and spacing by body area
| Area | Typical sessions | Spacing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upper lip & chin | 6–10 | 4 weeks | Hormone-driven; often needs maintenance |
| Underarms | 6–8 | 4–6 weeks | Responds fastest: coarse, dark hair |
| Bikini / Brazilian | 6–8 | 4–6 weeks | Excellent response |
| Arms | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks | Finer hair may need an extra session |
| Legs | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks | Slower cycle: space sessions further apart |
| Back & chest (men) | 8–10 | 6–8 weeks | Dense growth; hormones drive regrowth |
Body hair cycles more slowly than facial hair, which is why we book legs and backs further apart. Coming in too early treats hairs that are not yet in anagen and wastes a session.
What makes you need more (or fewer) sessions
What happens if you stop early or stretch it out
Stopping after two or three sessions leaves you with maybe 40–50% less hair: noticeable, but the remaining follicles are fully functional and will keep producing. Stretching the gap to three or four months between sessions is more forgiving than skipping entirely, but follicles that were only partially damaged can recover, so the course takes longer overall. The most cost-effective path is simply to finish on schedule.
Think of the course as one treatment delivered in instalments, not eight separate decisions.
How to get results in fewer sessions
- Shave the area 12–24 hours before every appointment, never wax, pluck or epilate between sessions.
- Avoid sun and self-tanner for two weeks before, so we can use full energy safely.
- Keep to the schedule your technician gives you; set the next appointment before you leave.
- Tell us about new medications, hormonal changes or pregnancy plans.
- Book a free consultation first so the plan matches your hair, skin and area from day one.

How many sessions of laser hair removal do you need for the face?
Usually 6–10 sessions about four weeks apart. Chin and jawline hair is often hormone-driven, so maintenance sessions once or twice a year are common.
How many sessions for underarms or a Brazilian?
Typically 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. These areas have coarse, dark hair and respond very well.
How many sessions for legs?
6–8 sessions, but spaced 6–8 weeks apart because leg hair cycles more slowly than facial hair.
Is laser hair removal permanent after 6 sessions?
Most clients have 80–90% permanent reduction after a full course. The follicles the laser destroyed do not regrow; a few dormant or hormone-activated follicles may need an occasional touch-up.
What happens if I miss a session?
Nothing is lost, but partially treated follicles can recover, so you may need the missed session at the end. Rebook as close to your original schedule as possible.
Why did hair grow back after my first session?
Treated hairs shed 1–3 weeks after a session, and untreated follicles enter their growth phase on their own timetable. That “regrowth” is the next wave the following session will target.
Can laser remove blonde, grey or red hair?
Not effectively. Those hairs contain too little melanin for the laser to target. Electrolysis is the recommended option.
